1970 Round 17 Central v West Torrens

This was a pretty willing match. And crowd control at Elizabeth back in 1970 was somewhat lax if this clip is anything to go by! Within the space of a few minutes a Torrens offficial and then a spectator get involved in some onfield scuffles.

1970 Lindsay Head announces his retirement

West Torrens legend Lindsay Head announces his retirement on the Channel 9 Football Show.. He played 327 games and kicked 519 goals.

70's high marks

1973 Trial game between West Adelaide and Essendon

Things turn nasty during this pre-season trial game when a brawl breaks out and even West Adelaide trainer Dick  Michalczyk  became involved. Michalczyk was unable to actually play for West as he was waiting for a clearance from East Perth. He was reported and suspended for getting invloved in this fight. The following year he went and played for North Melbourne without ever playing a game for West. How many players have been reported and suspended without ever actually playing a game?

1973 Champions of Australia Richmond 19.16.130 d Glenelg 16.19.115

Brief highlights from this match which was played at Adelaide Oval. Glenelg came from 41 points behind at half-time to eventually lose by only 15 points. The sides tossed to see who could wear their regular strip. Glenelg lost and were forced to wear the plain yellow guernseys.

South Adelaide legend Peter Darley plays his 200th game for South at Unley in 1974. Includes the guard of honour and Darley running through the banner before the game and some match highlights.

1974 Round 22 Carman pushes Cornes' face into mud at the Parade

Not Graham Cornes' finest moment. He upsets Phil Carman by raising an elbow, gives the Norwood crowd the "bird", kicks into the man on the mark and then gets his face pushed into the Parade mud.

Highlights from this game played at Football Park. Sturt beat Glenelg to take out the 1975 Datsun Cup. Sturt earned the princely sum of $5,000 for their efforts, Glenelg $2,000.

1974 Round 15 Glenelg 15.20.110 d Norwood 10.10.70

3 minutes of highlights from this game at Football Park. A fight breaks out after the 3 quarter-time siren. Was pretty willing in the last quarter as well by the look of it! Peter Marker is knocked-out and carried off on a stretcher. Wally May: "Someone will get killed, that's what will happen!". Max Hall: "He got a hit in the head but so what, it is a game of football and you gotta be a man and take it!". I love the 70's!

Over 5 minutes of highlights from this game which was the traditional re-match of the previous year's grand finalists played on Anzac Day.
Graham takes a brilliant overhead mark; "Oh what a mark! TREMENDOUS!"
Phillis marks overhead right on the Glenelg goal line, he goes back and slots it through.
Hodgeman kicks high to the goal square, Caldwell out-positions Murphy, marks and plays on to kick the goal; "good football!"
Graham takes another superb mark at centre half-forward. He goes back and kicks the goal from 40; "beautiful kick, no problems about that, split the centre!"
Fred Phillis takes a strong mark overhead from behind the pack.
Winter gets the sit and takes a big defensive grab; "number 3, clean as a whistle!"

Peter Carey kicks a goal from 65 metres. He also takes a big mark in the goal square.

1975 Round 15 Torrens 15.10.100 d West 12.10.82

Contains the entire last quarter of this famous game from Thebarton Oval. This was supposed to be West Torrens stalwart Fred Bills' last game (he came out of retirement and played some games in 1976). Bills almost caused a player count when he ran onto the ground to replace an injured player, whilst that player was still on the ground.

West players asked the umpire for a count and the fun began! Punches were thrown as West players tried to stop Torrens players from getting off the ground and escaping the count. 

Before the actual incident there are a few highlights from the match including some "interesting" footwork from West Torrens player John Casson.

1975 Preliminary Final Norwood 11.19.85 d Port 8.7.55

Woodcock takes a screamer falling backwards.
John Evans throws the ball in disgust and gives away a 15 metre penalty and then gets upset with John Wynn and causes the umpire to reverse a decision and give Wynn a free, "a foolish bit of football." Evans and Wynn later have a fight.
Granger "really looks the part" wearing number 31.
Woodcock kicks one from 60.
Cunningham kicks "a brilliant goal" from the pocket.
Umpire Bennett seems intent on paying holding the ball at every opportunity "he has given some shocking decisions today."
A spectator runs onto the ground and attacks umpire Bennett. A short, stout, middle-aged man, it somehow takes 7 police officers an eternity to remove him from the gound. Restraint techniques have come a long way since 1975!
Turbill kicks his 6th goal; "the best rover on the ground."

1976 Fred Bills plays his last game

Torrens stalwart and tough-man Freddie Bills managed to drag out his retirement. The famous "19th man game" in 1975 was supposed to be his last, but he went on to play some games in 1976. This clip is before his final game and includes Torrens coach Neil Kerley addressing his players before the game and also interviews club president Wayne Jackson, Jim Slaven and others as well as Bills himself.

In great pain and hardly able to move his left arm, Tyrell marks the ball and puts it through for a goal to give Woodville a lead of more than 6 points late in the final term. He is then leapt upon by 2 excited team mates which can't have improved his shoulder!
The video ends with Woodville's Frank Stemper forcing the ball out of bounds as Woodville hang on for a glorious first ever win over Port Adelaide.
